This Autumn (14 November – 28 November 2026), Techscaler is taking a cohort of up to six founders, co-founders, or senior leaders to Hong Kong: one of East Asia’s most dynamic commercial and tech hubs. We’re specifically calling for ambitious startups operating within Logistics & Maritime Tech, ClimateTech & Energy, or Applied AI & Smart City Tech.
Positioned strategically alongside major regional gatherings, including the Asian Logistics, Maritime and Aviation Conference (ALMAC) (16-17 Nov), Hong Kong Forum (17-18 Nov), and HKTDC Entrepreneur Day (19-20 Nov), this two-week supported programme isn't a study tour; it’s a commercial launchpad. The core trip is based in Hong Kong, with scope for targeted day visits to local innovation hubs across the Greater Bay Area (GBA), such as Shenzhen or Macao. If you want to explore tech ecosystems further north (like Shanghai), you can also arrange self-funded trip extensions once the main programme wraps up.
With applications closing at 9:00 am on Monday, 7th September, here are five ways you can sharpen your application right now to prove your startup is ready for Greater China expansion.
1. Start building your regional network right now
In East Asian business cultures, long-term trust, formal etiquette, and strategic relationships (guanxi) are the bedrock of success, especially when engaging port authorities, energy networks, or enterprise buyers. Don’t wait until you land at Hong Kong International Airport to start reaching out.
- The action: Map out enterprise buyers, regional logistics operators, energy networks, and smart city integrators across Hong Kong and Mainland China. Start reaching out via LinkedIn, email, and WeChat today. It’s also worth preparing physical business cards printed in English on one side and Traditional Chinese on the other, ready for two-handed presentation in market.
- What a winning application shows: "We have initiated direct discussions with two maritime logistics groups in Hong Kong and a smart-grid distributor in Shenzhen. We’ve scheduled in-person meetings during ALMAC and Entrepreneur Day to discuss pilot parameters."
2. Master the dual-market strategy: HK as your GBA gateway
Vague ambitions to "expand into Asia" won't cut it. Operating under "One Country, Two Systems," Hong Kong acts as an international common law tech hub, free port, and commercial launchpad into Mainland China. Your application needs to show that you understand how you plan to use Hong Kong as a strategic wedge for broader growth across the GBA and Mainland China.
- The action: Define your exact regional hypothesis:
- Logistics & Maritime Tech: Are you testing software with Hong Kong port operators during ALMAC before scaling across supply chain networks in Mainland China?
- ClimateTech & Energy: Are you aligning your solutions with Hong Kong's Climate Action Plan 2050 or industrial decarbonisation targets in Guangdong and East China?
- Applied AI & Smart City Tech: Are you deploying Hong Kong as a commercial testbed while tapping cross-border R&D infrastructure in the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Zone?
3. Do your homework on regional legal & operational frameworks
A common oversight for expanding startups is assuming that business setup, contracts, or IP registrations in Mainland China automatically apply in Hong Kong, or vice versa. Because Hong Kong and Mainland China operate under separate legal systems, you need to understand how business mechanics work across both jurisdictions.
- The action: Get your operational prep in order before applying:
- Understand dual jurisdictions: Recognise that Hong Kong and Mainland China maintain distinct legal regimes. Ensure you speak with qualified professional advisors regarding your IP strategy and legal registrations for both markets.
- Know the commercial norms: When engaging GBA manufacturing or enterprise partners in Mainland China, be aware that standard Western legal templates don't always translate cleanly, so familiarise yourself with local business contract expectations.
4. Demonstrate proven commercial and technical traction
The selection panel responds directly to proof, operational discipline, and realistic metrics. We’re looking for startups with a a product or technology mature enough to engage customers and partners, and existing momentum ready for enterprise deployment.
- The action: Present your operational metrics and commercial proof clearly in your narrative:
- Product maturity: Evidence that your product or technology is mature enough to engage customers and partners.
- Commercial traction: Proof that you are revenue-generating and/or have active commercial pilots in motion.
- Regional intent: Evidence that you have identified key regional partners for commercial milestones in Hong Kong, Mainland China, or the wider APAC region, can demonstrate a credible engagement strategy, and evidence meaningful traction.
5. Tailor your pitch deck & collateral for an East Asian audience
A pitch deck tailored for UK grant bodies or domestic procurement won't land with Hong Kong corporate boards or regional VCs. Enterprise buyers and investors look heavily at immediate commercial utility, clear ROI, and deployment viability.
- The action: Adapt your pitch assets specifically for this market:
- Lead with unit economics: Focus directly on proven ROI, operational sustainability, and integration capacity.
- Prepare bilingual summaries: Complement your pitch deck with concise 1-2 page executive summaries translated into Traditional Chinese for Hong Kong and Simplified Chinese for Mainland China.
- Outline language readiness: English is standard in Hong Kong corporate settings, but acknowledge how your team plans to handle Mandarin for cross-border Mainland China engagement.

A note on what makes a winning application
This is a supported, participant-led experience. We set the scene, open regional doors, and provide mentorship, but you drive your own business development on the ground.
Show us that you’ve done the groundwork and that participating in this programme will be a true accelerator and enabler for your business, not that you expect us to build your market strategy or win customers for you. The strongest applications demonstrate clear intent, active regional momentum, and a compelling reason why this trip is the exact catalyst your startup needs right now.
